First graders love to share special items from home with their classmates. This is a wonderful way for students to get to know one another and practice skills such as public speaking, active listening, and asking good questions. In fact, these are such important skills they are part of the Speaking and Listening Common Core State Standards:
~S.L. 1.3 Ask and answer questions about what a speaker says in order to gather additional information or clarify something that is not understood. ~S.L. 1.4 Describe people, places, things, and events with relevant details, expressing ideas and feelings clearly.
Show & Tell takes place on Friday. In order to increase our learning, students MUST be able to answer the attached questions before sharing their item. Please help your student by practicing presenting their item at home. In addition, items that students bring in should be mementos or something special. Some ideas include a favorite book, an instrument, a family picture, a special toy, a souvenir from a vacation, etc. Students should NOT bring in weapons or items that are expensive. An item should only be shared ONE time. Bringing in a Show & Tell item every week is NOT required.
If you CHOOSE to bring in something for Show & Tell, you must be able to answer the following questions about your item. Only students that are able to clearly present their item will be allowed to share. An adult at home may help you with this.
